FDRI Winterthur – Weinfelden – reduced travel time on line 840

Project Description

Under the ‘Future Development of Railway Infrastructure’ (FDRI) plan, there will be changes to long-distance traffic on the Winterthur – Weinfelden – Konstanz / Romanshorn route from December 2018 onwards. Increased speeds on the section between Winterthur and Weinfelden will reduce travel time for long-distance trains by a total of 48 seconds. SBB plans to speed up long-distance traffic on the Winterthur – Weinfelden line so that the Kreuzlingen/Romanshorn junctions can be switched at quarter past and quarter to the hour. The maximum speed on the line is currently 125 km/h; this will rise to 150 km/h in future. For trains to be able to travel at these increased speeds, various building works are required along with improvements to the underlying foundations:

  • • Improving the foundations on seven sections of the line with a total track length of approx. 5,400 m, including renewal of track surfaces and drainage systems
  • • Installation of a RÜGLEI track verge reinforcement system to ensure an embankment width of at least 60 cm
  • • Expansion of Islikon station by rebuilding platform 3 to P55 standard, plus construction of disabled-accessible underpass and replacement of customer service centre
  • • Expansion of Felben-Wellhausen station by replacing central platform with longer external platforms including access ramps
  • • Renovation of waiting room at Hüttlingen-Mettendorf station
  • • Minor alterations to a total of 82 structures, including bridges, underpasses, overhead walkways, passageways etc. between Winterthur and Weinfelden
  • • Construction of noise barriers totalling 1,240 metres in Rickebach-Attikon, Frauenfeld and Felben-Wellhausen to ensure compliance with noise emission limits as a result of the increased traffic speed

Special Features of the Project

The biggest challenge for this project is maintaining railway traffic over the full length of the line throughout the course of the works. The public areas and access to platforms at Islikon and Felben-Wellhausen must also remain accessible at all times. Various tasks to be completed as part of the works, including ballast bracing and the construction of pylon foundations, can only be carried out at night.

Logistics is another major challenge, and includes transporting material to the various foundation repair sites. The affected tracks – which are up to 1,800 metres long – will have to be filled to allow for works access. This is the only way to ensure the effective transportation of ballast and foundation materials.
