The Walchebrücke Bridge in Zurich connects two central, heavily frequented hubs: Walcheplatz on the right bank and Bahnhofquai on the left bank of the Limmat River. The main goal of the project was the complete renovation of mastic asphalt on the roadways between the sidewalks and the tram trough, which had been heavily worn over the years. During this renovation, both the surface and the underlying waterproofing were renewed, using UHFB as the new waterproofing layer with variable thickness and a minimum of 40 mm.
A key feature of this project was the heavy load on the bridge's roadway, which necessitated the use of UHFB as both waterproofing and road surfacing with a gravel matrix. To ensure longevity and proper functionality, the UHFB was applied in multiple layers to accommodate the bridge's varying cross-slopes. Additionally, partial replacement of surfaces, waterproofing, and drainage systems was carried out in the areas of curbs and sidewalks to ensure proper finishing.
The renovation of the Walchebrücke Bridge presented several technical challenges:
Variable thickness of UHFB: Due to the varying cross-slopes of the bridge, UHFB had to be applied with variable thickness. This required precise planning and execution to ensure uniform and functional waterproofing and surfacing.
Traffic management: As the Walchebrücke Bridge is a key traffic artery in Zurich, thoughtful traffic management was essential during construction to minimize congestion and disruptions.
Weather-dependent work: The use of UHFB and mastic asphalt is highly dependent on weather conditions. Flexible construction planning was therefore necessary to avoid delays caused by unfavorable weather.
