Overview

Road surface renewal Zurich Airport railroad station

Rail-bound construction work at night at Zurich Airport train station.

Project description

Between October 2019 and March 2020, we renewed the tracks slab track at Zurich Airport in a consortium. A four-week total closure was available for each track of 600 m each. The supply of the construction site could only be carried out at night and by rail, as there were no normal accesses via the airport. The new track was constructed with Vossloh DFF 304 system and cast-in-place concrete supports (25% UHFB UB and 75% SCC C50/60).

Special features

Concrete production presented a major challenge. Due to limited accessibility, it was not economical to deliver fresh concrete directly from the plant. The solution was to produce both the UHFB and the SCC concrete in the tunnel using a compulsory mixer. The next challenge was the on-site concrete transport. Since the platform was already occupied by the parallel project on the one hand, and on the other hand the payload of only 500 kg/m2 was not suitable for the concrete logistics, and in addition the quantities were too small for pumping, we developed a track-going e-trolley with which we could drive over the fine-tuned track.

The island construction site with very limited access possibilities and practically no installation areas as well as the tight time and space conditions required demanding logistics. At the same time, the platform lighting was replaced in a parallel project. Furthermore, the immediate proximity to the public had to be taken into account and the health and safety measures for underground work had to be implemented.
