The border bridge is an important connecting element between Basel-Stadt and Weil am Rhein (D). Built between 1976 and 1980, the structure is 1.5 km long in total and consists of four partial bridges and an entrance/exit. About 500 meters of the bridge are on German soil. It also crosses the Deutsche Bahn and Hafenbahn rail networks at two points. Taking into account the increasing traffic figures and the increased weight load, the bridge needs to be repaired after an operating period of more than 38 years from 2018 to 2022.
The completed works included the construction phase 1 - flexibilization of the overall rehabilitation of the bridge object N2/925 border bridge. It also included the preliminary phase Gerber joints and construction phase 1. In the preliminary phase, the Gerber joints were strengthened. In construction phase 1, the central carriageway was repaired and the central retaining wall was replaced with a concrete beam. This subsequently allowed flexibility of the lanes for the subsequent construction phases and continuous operation. However, the live/traffic load did not change.
The main construction measures in construction phase 1 flexibilization included the following work in detail:
