555 metre challenge - repair of the Limmat bridge

The renovation of the "Limmat Bridge" is a construction project with many interfaces and conditions imposed by environmental associations and the responsible authorities. The almost inconspicuous bridge starts and stops in the settlement area and crosses a nature reserve, the river Limmat, the most frequented pedestrian path along the Limmat river, one of the most frequented railway lines in Switzerland, the main axis Zurich-Bern, as well as two cantonal and two municipal roads.

Project

The Limmat Bridge was completed and put into operation in 1983 as a 555-metre-long prestressed concrete bridge. It spans the entire Limmat valley between the Urdorf Nord junction and the Limmattaler Kreuz. The comprehensive overhaul of the Limmat Bridge aims to preserve the structure for a remaining useful life of approx. 60 years and to ensure an intervention-free period of 15 years. The work, which will take almost 2 years, will be carried out in four stages. As part of the bridge renovation, the Chur/Lucerne carriageway will also be widened by approx. one metre in the area between the FG Wiesenstrasse pedestrian overpass (Luberzenweg) and the Urdorf Nord exit by means of a heavyweight wall in the form of a guide wall (System 92).

Special features

The bridge is composed of 16 spans or elements. The spans of these prestressed concrete elements vary between 25 and 58 metres. In cross-section, the bridge is designed as a double box girder (one box girder per direction of traffic). The bridge box girders each have a width of 5 metres, the total bridge width is 29.25 metres.

Challenges

The large number of transverse prestressings in the bridge slab (every 90cm over a length of 555m) were a major challenge in each stage and during each work operation (scaffolding work and reinforcement of the edge guide wall).
