For the overall remediation of the Kölliken/AG hazardous waste landfill, the SMDK decided to dismantle the hazardous waste stored between 1978 and 1985 under the protection of an airtight steel construction hall and to dispose of it in compliance with the law. Based on the new concept of a large-scale, column-free excavation hall, the Phoenix consortium opted for a two-dimensional, layer-by-layer dismantling of the landfill instead of the vertical dismantling initially planned. High embankments and the associated risks are eliminated. The landfill is removed in layers from top to bottom. Among other things, this has the advantage that the material can already be sampled and triaged according to various categories before it is removed.
Internal safety technology: The dismantling work is carried out with special equipment and machines in which the operating personnel work in airtight cabins with fresh air supply. Access to and exit from the cabins is via docking stations directly from the uncontaminated zone, the so-called white area.
Dismantling and transport routes: The material is conveyed from the excavation hall to the manipulation hall or to the storage hall on three hall-internal deconstruction and transport routes and then packed.
Recycling: The selected variant further provides for more material to be recycled, for example to the ESAR soil washing plant in Rümlang, slag recycling or thermal soil treatment plants in Switzerland and abroad. The material is definitively processed or stored in compliance with the law at disposal facilities throughout Europe.
