On April 25 of the current year, redesign and renovation work began on one of the most important inner-city transport hubs in the city of Zurich. With six streetcar and two bus lines and around 45,000 passengers boarding and alighting each day, Central is one of the busiest stops of Zurich's public transport system.
The entire track system, drainage lines, pipe blocks and pavements had to be renewed. In addition, the stopping edges of streetcar lines 4 and 15 were widened and extended to increase transport capacity.
Another striking renewal is the construction of three large bus shelter roofs. In addition to providing weather protection for passengers, these are also intended to strengthen "Central" as a public space.
In order to master all these ambitious tasks at all, streetcar service was completely shut down for five weeks. Likewise, the foundations of the new tram stop roofs, including excavation, had to be completed within 24 hours.
Overall, the work required two-shift operation in combination with night work and weekend work for safety, traffic and logistical reasons as well as for scheduling reasons.
We appreciate your interest in the WALO Group and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
